Chapter 10
In the dream, Gem O’Shea was screaming, pressing her hands against the side of the carriage, looking behind her as if someone was there. Who? As Cassidy drifted, images jumbled, probably because she and Dario had lain in bed earlier, reading the files. They’d stopped only when tenants had come by to complain about last night’s noise. Now Cassidy heard hooves pounding, and saw a road illuminated by gas lamps hanging suspended from iron stands. Suddenly, the horses reared; the carriage began rattling, its nearly disengaged wheel clattering, and it plunged over the bank, splashing into forbidding waters that churned furiously.
Suddenly, the scene shifted and Cassidy was nervously entering the Chinese restaurant where she and Dario had eaten with Karen and Pat tonight, then she was joking with his best friends, amazed that they were hitting it off. Karen was apparently best friends with Eliana, and Cassidy suspected she’d like Dario’s sister, as well. She’d had no idea how to use chopsticks—the only Chinese restaurant in her hometown served with forks—and everyone had pitched in to teach her.
“Don’t wear panties tonight,” Dario had said as she’d discarded a pair of jeans and decided on a dress to wear while they were preparing to leave.
“No panties?”
“Please,” he’d whispered.
“Are you prepared to beg?”
“On my knees.”
She hadn’t made Dario do so, but she hadn’t worn any panties, either. Completely naked beneath a green silk shirt dress, she’d thrilled at the way the night air had felt, then at how easily Dario’s had surreptitiously caressed her as they’d enjoyed dinner. All night, Cassidy had wondered what was happening between her and this man. Should she embrace feelings that already threatened to become more than the sexual encounter they’d agreed to share? Or run?
Karen and Pat’s company had been an impediment to lovemaking, and it had left Cassidy chomping at the bit. To offset the feelings, she’d tried to tell herself she was only using Dario, so she could search the house, and also because she needed to do something wild, to get her feet wet after the divorce. Dario was going to keep peeling back layers, just the way he stripped off her clothes, to reveal dangerous potential she’d never guessed she had, a vein of sensual gold only he could tap.
On the way back to Anthony Street, they’d walked hand-in-hand through winding streets of Chinatown. Crowds had surrounded them, jostling and pushing them into each other’s arms. He’d bought a fruit she’d never heard of from a vendor, then he’d fed it to her. Tossing away the seed, he’d hauled her into an alleyway and licked juice from her lips until they were both shivering with need.
They’d barely made it inside the apartment before they were tearing off each other’s clothes. After unbuttoning her dress, he’d backed her against the door, lifting her into his arms. As their mouths met, her legs had circled his waist, and a second later, he was inside her, his jeans still on, unzipped and pushed down on his hips.
